Phobias Informative speech Okay, so I want all of you to imagine a giant hairy spider crawling on your arm. Its not doing any harm but it is just sitting there; for some of fall this is your worst nightmare. If you are one of those people you may have arachnophobia which is the extreme fear of spiders. For some of fall imagining you are in a tight space that is constricting any movement makes you feel very uneasy and want to scream; this may be because you have claustrophobia. : “Almost 6. 2 million [United State] citizens have some sort of specific and these are just some examples. Lully phobias will be categorized into four different groups. Animal phobias, which when someone is afraid of dogs or snakes. Natural environmental phobias, which would be the fear Of heights or thunderstorms. Situational phobias, also known as specific phobias, which would be the fear of flying or enclosed places. Then finally blood-injection-injury phobia which is usually the fear of blood or medical procedures. Some phobias don’t fit into these categories and are usually known as the less common phobias (Smith). Katherine K.

Haunter, a postdoctoral fellow at the Northwestern University Fingers School of Medicine, once said “irrational and excessive fear, however, is typically a maladaptive response. In humans, an unwarranted, persistent fear of a certain situation or object, known as specific phobia, can cause overwhelming distress and interfere with daily life”. Most people form their fears based off of their genetics. A personal example of that is when I get shots faint; this happens because I get so worked up over the fact that a needle is about to stab my arm that my body goes into protection mode.

My mom use to have the exact same thing happen to her. This would be a classic example of transportation. When a person is experiencing an event that is relative to their phobia usually they will feel very uneasy, their heart starts to race, they may start to tremble or shake, and usually end up feeling dizzy. Emotionally they feel very overwhelmed, a sense of being detached from their body, and may even convince themselves they are going to die. If the phobia is bad enough they will always be confronting these feelings and will begin to let it take over their life.

If the person has a phobia over things that are a part of everyday life and effect their basic needs of living like chipboard (fear of food), they would need to seek treatment from a therapist. The rule of thumb to tell when a person needs to seek treatment from a therapist is if it causes extreme anxiety when simply thinking about the phobia, if the phobia is unreasonable or excessive, if they avoid places because their might be a chance they could confront their phobia, or if the phobia is life threatening (obviously).

Usually when therapist are treating people with extreme phobias they will gradually make the patient face their fear. If the person has a phobia of dogs they would start off with just showing them a picture of a dog. Then once they could handle that they would show them videos or maybe even have them look at a dog from far away. Once they graduated this step they would slowly but surely have the patient get to the point where they would pet the dog and finally overcome that phobia.

Most therapist when treating these patients will also try and figure out where the phobia came from. Dry. Paul Douglass says that “phobias are often caused in childhood, [when] the child experiences a real fear, but the mind engages to detach (or repress) the feeling of terror, from the situation that caused it”. Usually when these phobias are not taken care of early on this will follow the child into adulthood which leads to excessive phobias.

When adults and reintroduced to the fear, such as spiders, the subconscious mind will connect the feeling of when they were a child and resurface the strong fear and emotions all over again. Therapist also understand that other phobias could be formed through traumatic events at any stage of life. “For instance, watching a devastating airplane crash on the news may trigger a fear of flying. That said, discerning the origin of the disorder can be difficult because people tend to do a poor job of identifying the Source Of their fears” (Watts).

Some phobias are very natural though. Most people in this room probably have the claustrophobia which is the fear of speaking in front of people and also the #1 fear in America followed by thingamabob, the fear of death. Some of these natural phobias are fears that we can cope with and overcome. Most of the time when confronting these phobias they might even give you motivation that can usually in the long run lead to overcoming this fear. Overall, each of these phobias fit into the categories of irrational and natural fears.
